Diabetic nephropathy is a complication of diabetes type 1 and type 2 that affects the kidney. Uncontrolled diabetes can damage the blood vessels of the kidney and can affect the filtration of blood, and also lead to high blood pressure.
Risk factors for diabetic nephropathy are
- Uncontrolled blood sugar level
- Uncontrolled blood pressure

- High cholesterol
- Obesity
- Family history of diabetes
Symptoms of early diabetic nephropathy are
- Worsening blood pressure control
- Protein in the urine
- Swelling of feet, ankles, hands, or eyes
- Increased need to urinate
- Reduced need for insulin or diabetes medicine
- Confusion or difficulty concentrating
- Shortness of breath
- Loss of appetite
- Nausea and vomiting
- Persistent itching
- Fatigue
